In 1875, concerned over the clearing of natural forests for building material by the Settlers, the South Australian Government commenced forest planting.
During the Depression of the 1930’s Radiata Pine was planted and the Woods and Forest Department of the South Australian Government took over the responsibility of these pine forests.
Local Employment
These softwood forests provided much needed employment but required urgent ‘thinning’ to maintain their health and ensure a sustainable supply of construction timber.
The dilemma was finding a suitable use for these ‘thinnings’.
Originally used for production of wooden packing cases and in paper board products, the introduction of low cost corrugated paper board containers resulted in a rapid decline in demand and a large surplus of ‘thinnings’.
Search for a Sustainable Solution
With no alternative ‘thinnings’ were felled and simple left to decay within the plantations. By the 1950s this created a real problem. Forests deteriorated and a potentially valuable resource wasted.
One obvious option was the establishment of a pulp mill prompting the State Government to search for a likely commercial pulping company.
KCC Invests in South Australia
The result was the establishment of a pulp and tissue manufacturing operation in 1960 by Australian Paper Manufacturing (APM), now home to Kimberly-Clark Australia’s Tantanoola and Millicent Mills. Representing the first acquisition by KCC outside the US, the mills today provide employment for over 1500 people.
It is here that Kimberly-Clark Australia manufactures leading KLEENEX®, KLEENEX COTTONELLE® and VIVA® products. As well as our WONDERSOFT®, THICK & THIRSTY® and Kimberly-Clark Professional product ranges and fluff pulp used in our HUGGIES® and SNUGGLERS® Nappies.
